Carnations

Revival of a flower that went out of favour. Carnations are perennials and have flowers on tall stems. Flowers can be single or double. A outstanding vase life of 14-21 days.  As garden flowers they produce colour all summer long. Best picked when 1 -2 flower are open on the spray.

Once known as the flower of the god it fell out of favour mostly due the glut of mass produced flowers from Columbia. They were bred with inflexible stems, uniform flower shape and often dyed with unnatural colours.

Chaubaud french heirloom carnations have frilly flowers with a strong clove spicy scent which can fill a room.

Newer carnation breeding has produced some fabulous tones in muted subtle colours including terracotta, peach, mauves and dark muddy purple. These colours can come at a cost of little or no scent.

A vase arrangement of 10 or more carnation stems can make a statement arrangement.

Carnations can be reflexed which is the process of removing the green calyx and opening the petals gently to create a more open flower.

Deadhead carnations to encourge repeat flowering. At the end of summer or early autumn cut your carnation plants back by half to encourage a thick new growth the following spring.
